Thorpedale Road
A three-bedroom Victorian terraced house extended with a mansard loft, creating a master suite with carefully considered interiors, abundant natural light, and a contextual yet contemporary feel.
Behind a large pocket door, the new staircase leads to a level that feels private and tranquil, entirely separate from the house below. The bedroom spans the full footprint of the main house, offering front-to-back views through generous windows. Sculptural elements subtly soften the room, and earthy tones and timber textures in the flooring and cabinetry introduce natural warmth. Period-inspired details, like a new fireplace and large sash windows, anchor the addition within its historic context.
Positioning the bedroom door at the bottom of the stair, rather than the top, allows the space to unfold as a single, continuous volume. The bathroom is defined by a sculpted wall that doesn’t intrude in the space, while a circular skylight above the shower follows the curve of the wall, bringing light into the space.
Generously sized windows bring abundant natural light into the space. Front-facing windows maintain a traditional character, while rear-facing glazing adopts a more contemporary expression. A skylight above the stairwell directs light down through the pocket door, connecting the levels.
A restrained palette of carefully selected materials defines the interiors. Clay plaster walls follow the natural curves of the space, while Dinesen Douglas flooring introduces warmth and tactility. Bespoke shutters, joinery, architraves, and the stone fireplace introduce refinement and thoughtful detail.
